Yea, I can't say I've ever gathered together the different comments about teetotalism so now I am wondering if he objects on a consistent basis. I recall one comment he made where he rips on it for not being Biblical, which is something Mormons can agree with. I definitely think that teetotalism would look especially stupid in a religious context where everything derives is authority from the Bible.

Thanks Jacob J, and yes that one will make an appearance. (Evan Stephensen, I believe, refers to it in his Last Battle article as well. There are plenty other letters wherein Lewis lets loose on "teetotalism." Oddly, some of what seem like his harshest criticisms are directed at this idea. (He was also angry with certain "Quaker bigots" who tried to tear down other people's beliefs all the time. Were Quakers teetotalists at the time? I'll have to look into that.)

cinepro: Benson's talk clearly depends upon Lewis's chapter in several cases. I haven't seen a really good treatment on the similarities, however. There are rumors that Pres. Benson received help on the talk from May Benson (his oldest son Reed's wife). This information was given "by a reliable source" to Steve Benson, a vocal critic of the Church. I'd like to see someone really look into how the talk came to be.

Justin, thanks for the reminder of the Midgley reference, I forgot to include that in the overview. It is, to my knowledge, the earliest reference to Lewis in an LDS publication. Incidentally it seems the first reference to Lewis in Sunstone looks to be a 1979 article by Daniel C. Peterson called "Heavenly Sings and Aerial Combat." (See Sunstone Magazine, Issue 14: March-April 1979, pp. 27-32.

Re early LDS usage of, and interest in, C.S. Lewis, I would also note that BYU Studies reprinted Lewis's essay "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism" in the Autumn 1968 issue (33-48), and the Winter 1969 issue included a review of Lewis's Christian Reflections (221-24).
