Elsewhere I noted that Lewis's shifting ideas on doctrine and pragmatic approach to various theories make relying on his fiction to state his positions unreliable in certain ways:

While Lewis himself made use of a ransom theory of Christian soteriology which featured Aslan as the Christ figure in The Last Battle, it does not follow that Lewis embraced that particular theory above any others. This is evident from his explanation in Mere Christianity: The central Christian belief is that Christ’s death has somehow put us right with God and given us a fresh start…Any theories we build up as to how Christ’s death did all this are, in my view, quite secondary: mere plans or diagrams to be left alone if they do not help us, and, even if they do not help us, not to be confused with the thing itself," (Lewis, Mere Christianity [Granite, 2006], pp. 54-55). In regards to his fiction he wanted it known that his were stories and not exact representations of doctrine: "You must not confuse my romances with my theses," he wrote to someone asking about his literary ideas for Out of the Silent Planet. "In the latter I state and argue a creed. In the former much is merely supposed for the sake of the story” (CL 2:914).

Good stuff, I am really looking forward to your paper. I am a huge fan of Lewis. It is great to read in his letters to children when they ask about Narnia how he gently nudges them in the right direction but never comes out and explains the gospel parallels directly. You can tell he really wanted them to see if for themselves, maybe because of his commitment to the effectiveness of a good sneak attack.
